What is GPS ?

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are actually composed of several orbiting satellites. The United States currently has 24 of these GPS satellites circling the planet and has an average distance of 12,000 miles from the Earth’s surface. Every satellite transmits radio signals that are gathered by GPS receivers located on the ground. They orbit the planet at least twice each day. The position of the satellites and reference time are among the information transmitted to the GPS receivers.
The process of pinpointing the exact location of a particular receiver is called GPS tracking. Although the cost of using GPS technology has first been quite high, nowadays it has become much more affordable. In fact, many companies have already embarked on numerous researched in order to add to the growing number of GPS applications.
Users of GPS devices will be able to monitor the locations they have been to using GPS tracking. When combined with broadcast technologies such as radio or wristwatch, these GPS units become handheld navigation devices. For instance, you can outfit your GPS watch with software that will allow you to transmit radio signals to a central command. In return, the central command will transmit the information obtained by the GPS receiver to anyone who might be interested in knowing your exact location. With such useful features, it is not surprising that a lot of mobile phones and wristbands already have this amazing GPS feature. This way, users no longer need to install a GPS navigation device on their vehicles or buy a PDA.
The GPS systems were originally designed for tracking vehicles, which are reported as stolen. The police can request the control center for information regarding the whereabouts of the said vehicle. Once pinpointed, all they have to do is go to the exact location. This tracking function has also been found to be useful in fields including coordinated tracking, consumer tracking and pet tracking.
For the average individual, GPS devices are used to locate a particular place of interest. Usually they are used when traveling, hiking or biking. Some users find these GPS devices to be handy especially if they are going on a trip to an unfamiliar country. Since most GPS systems are pre-loaded with digital maps, exploring new places do not seem frightening. These maps provide information about important landmarks including attractions, hotels, gas stations and restaurants. If your GPS device is equipped with the latest software, then it is also possible to locate a restaurant, call and make reservations.
With the growing demand for handy GPS devices that can be used for everyday life, it is not surprising that many companies work hard to bring their consumers fully-loaded GPS units. It can be expected that in the near futures, these navigation devices will be considered a necessity.
When buying a GPS device online, make sure you check the reliability of the retailer and my favorite store is Amazon.com. Also, it is important to do some research in order to determine which among the many navigation devices will be perfect for your needs.
